Abstract:
Programming languages are languages, as many people have argued. Language, however, is a multi-faceted concept. The word language has two meanings, according to Vogel et al.: “Depending on one’s perspective, “language” might refer to two distinct, but interrelated ideas: “a named language” (a noun) or “languaging” (a verb which stands in for meaning-making, communicating and expressing) (Otheguy et al. 2015).”
This paper asks the question whether one can engage in “languaging” within a programming language.
